Revised Internship Hospital Approval Process — Mandatory Online Submission

Issued to: All Provisionally Registered Doctors & Hospital Directors

With effect from 01 May 2026, all requests for internship hospital approval and rotation transfer must be submitted through the SLMC e-Services portal. Paper/manual applications will no longer be processed. Hospital directors are required to confirm approval of intern placements via the portal.

Annual Registration Renewal — Reminder and Penalty for Late Renewal

Issued to: All Fully Registered Medical & Dental Practitioners

All registered practitioners are reminded that annual renewal of SLMC registration for the year 2026 must be completed before 31 December 2026. Practising with an expired registration constitutes an offence under the Medical Ordinance. A late renewal penalty fee applies from 01 January of the following year.

Social Media Use by Registered Medical Practitioners — Guidance and Obligations

Issued to: All Registered Medical & Dental Practitioners

This circular provides guidance on the professional obligations of registered practitioners in relation to the use of social media platforms. Practitioners must not share patient information, clinical images, or identifiable case details on any public platform. Breach of patient confidentiality via social media constitutes professional misconduct.

Revised Registration and Examination Fee Schedule — Effective 01 August 2025

Issued to: All Applicants, Registered Practitioners & Institutions

In accordance with Gazette Notification No. 2359/22 dated 25 June 2025, the SLMC fee schedule for registration, renewal, ERPM examinations, and certificates has been revised with effect from 01 August 2025. The full revised fee schedule is annexed to this circular and is available on the SLMC website.

ERPM — Revised Syllabus and Examination Regulations Effective January 2026

Issued to: All ERPM Candidates & Overseas Medical Graduates

The SLMC has revised the ERPM syllabus and examination regulations with effect from the First Sitting of 2026. Key changes include the introduction of a revised OSCE format with standardised marking rubrics, updated clinical scenarios aligned with current Sri Lankan clinical practice guidelines, and revised pass mark methodology. Candidates registered before 2026 are advised to review the revised syllabus.

Overseas Graduate Degree Certificate Approval — Updated Document Requirements

Issued to: All Overseas Medical Graduates Seeking SLMC Registration

With effect from 01 April 2025, overseas graduates applying for degree certificate approval must provide a Certificate of Good Standing issued by the medical council of the country where the degree was awarded. Certificates must be apostilled or attested by the relevant authority and must be dated no more than six months before the date of the SLMC application.

Mandatory Reporting of Adverse Events and Serious Incidents

Issued to: All Registered Medical & Dental Practitioners

All registered practitioners have a professional obligation to report serious adverse clinical events, unexpected patient deaths, and near-miss incidents to the relevant hospital administration and, where applicable, to SLMC. Failure to report a serious incident that subsequently becomes the subject of a complaint may be treated as an aggravating factor in any disciplinary proceedings.

Internship Performance Report — Updated Form and Grading Criteria

Issued to: All Consultant Supervisors, Hospital Directors & Intern Doctors

The SLMC has updated the Internship Performance Report form with effect from 01 October 2024. All performance reports for rotations completed on or after this date must use the new form, which is available on the SLMC website. Reports on the old form will not be accepted. Supervising consultants are responsible for completing the form at the end of each rotation.

Introduction of Online Fee Payment via e-Services Portal

Issued to: All Applicants & Registered Practitioners

With effect from 01 July 2024, registration fees, renewal fees, and examination fees may be paid online via the SLMC e-Services portal using debit or credit card. Cash payments at the SLMC office will continue to be accepted. Online payment receipts are issued instantly and are valid for all SLMC application processes.

Allied Health Professionals Registration — Updated Categories and Eligibility

Issued to: Allied Health Professionals & Institutions

The SLMC has expanded the categories of allied health professionals eligible for SLMC registration in accordance with the Medical (Amendment) Act. The updated categories, eligibility criteria, and required qualifications are detailed in the annex to this circular. Applications from newly eligible categories will be accepted from 01 March 2024.

Telemedicine Practice — Guidance for Registered Practitioners

Issued to: All Registered Medical Practitioners

This circular provides guidance on the professional and ethical obligations of SLMC-registered practitioners when providing clinical consultations via telemedicine or digital health platforms. Practitioners must be fully registered, must document telemedicine consultations in the same manner as in-person consultations, and must not prescribe controlled drugs via telemedicine.
